Sagittarian 1 (Longer)
The image of a Sagittarian rearing on its hind legs, bow in hand, has always been iconic to me. It hits hard; it’s powerful. Horses are such beautiful creatures, and their musculature is impressive. But while human anatomy is a challenge, horse anatomy is a whole new ball game! Getting these two forms to fit together perfectly took some working out. My first attempt in 2007 looked more like a half-human, dwarf/horse hybrid! This second version is much more considered in proportion. I even used a draught horse as my reference point—the thought of a creature that massive and powerful existing is amazing. The Sagittarian is a design I’ve been chasing for years. I remember the initial spark—wanting to clothe him in armour, a helmet, and a blade. While my concept art has birthed many variations since then, this sculpture captures the core of the character. I may add the sword and helmet in a later evolution, but for now, he stands as he is.
